Running an application on Ubuntu 16 Shell with an error

Hello. I am a novice at Linux and I am trying to make sense of this error I am running into. When I run the command to open the application through SSH through Putty, I get this error.
"unable to initialize display handler or too small terminal
Display thread was Unable to init..."

What would cause this error ?

You probably can't launch a graphical session through putty. There are ways to import an X session, but not to Windows, I don't think.

So, I have used this application before and it worked completely fine. I am just trying to run it again. I am using pftp by the way. Not sure if you're familiar to that or not. It can definitely be run on Putty. It's like Irssi.

If it did work at one time then we'd think it could again. There may be some logs to help this out.
