"Run Command" dialog

Is there some "Run Command" dialog box program independent of desktop environment?

For example I would like my Openbox menu to have an item called "Run" that would pop up a dialog box in which I can type a command.

If I want to do something like that, I use the terminal.

A terminal is allways somewhere. It opens a box where you can put in commands. So I do not see the point to name it Run. But it is possible to use a link with that name too.

Hope I did understand your problem.

But I don't want to have a terminal open all the tme for the application to run.

I just want some place to type the name of a GUI application an then run it. The menu in most desktop envirinments have such a thing, but I wonder if you can have it without a DE.

A dialog box to run applications is provided by gmrun, an old but still functional software, which is reported to work with openbox (standalone). It supports tab completion and URL handling.

Source code is available at Sourceforge, where last version is dated 2003 (I don't know if a more recent version is available somewhere else). To compile with gcc 4.3, you have to modify the name of some header files in #include statements. If you have some experience in compiling software from source, it should be a trivial task.

Once you have it installed , you may bind the key combination "Alt-F2" to launch it in openbox (the same shortcut used by many desktop managers to open the "run application" dialog).
