resising large image library

Hello -

I have a rather extensive image library I'm going to be putting on the web -- I want to convert these images into a smaller size with a lower DPI and also generate thumbnail images for these files.

Does anyone have any suggestions of a program that would make this easier?? could you provide links to any aritcles that demonstrate a similar function??

The Gimp seems pretty automatable but there has to be CLI tools that would greatly simplify this process with a shell script.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers -
Cole

There is the famous Image Magick. If you install the Image Magick perl modules, it will give you more control. When you save the image as either jpeg or ping, the DPI will be 72. You just need to worry about the width and height of image.

file sizes

Alright so I got them all converted with Image Magik -- how nice!! Thank you VERY much for the tip.

My dilemma now are the file sizes.... they are HUGE for what they are... Photoshop has an Export for the Web option that was really nice because of the file sizes... Is there anything like this for Linux??

You can try to create or add more lines to a script that takes a file and tries several compression ratios at once. Then you can pick one that you like. You can also add a few lines to count how many colors and use that as the pallete.
