Smile Repartitioning. Grub changes.

Hello!

I am running both Ubuntu 7.04 and WinXP on the same HD. Partitions are as follows:
http://img511.imageshack.us/my.php?i...rtitionqz9.jpg

I want to resize one of the NTFS partitions (to make it smaller) and create a new FAT32 partition to share information between Ubuntu and Windows. Yes, I know that it is possible to write on a NTFS partition but for compatibility issues I think a FAT32 partition is still better. Am I wrong?

So, once I create the new partition, the rest will move so I'll have to modify my GRUB MENU.lst file to be able to boot from Ubuntu again.
The question is simple, what should I modify and how should I do it not to make mistakes :-) ?

My Grub MENU.LST file look like:
====================================================================
# menu.lst
default 4

timeout 60

color white/black yellow/blue

title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic
root (hd0,2)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-generic root=UUID=1792593d-93e9-4151-92ba-7b342da5900e ro quiet splash vga=794
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic
quiet
savedefault

title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic (recovery mode)
root (hd0,2)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-generic root=UUID=1792593d-93e9-4151-92ba-7b342da5900e ro single
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic

title Ubuntu, memtest86+
root (hd0,2)
kernel /boot/memtest86+.bin
quiet

title Other operating systems:
root

title Microsoft Windows XP Professional
root (hd0,0)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1

========================================================================
Thanks in advance,
glore2002.-

You will not be able to create another partition as you already have 4 primary's on the system. By the way if you didn't you wouldn't need to update anything.

Not pretty - did Ubuntu force that root to be a primary ???.
Makes things awkward.

Can't really be done until you move that root into a logical. Fair bit of work involved.

Edit: Maybe you could achieve what you want by shrinking /home.
As exvor suggested it won't affect the boot, you simply need to update fstab.
(ntfs-3g is supposed to be safe for update; might be in the Feisty repositories - I still prefer fat32 personally)

I believe that if you move root to a logical, not only will you have to modify grub, but you'll probably have to recreate your initrd as well.

Yeah moving around the partitions you would need to modify grub at that point.
