remote root login to SLES X display

Hi

I have a SLES 8 SP3 system, and I'd like to access the system via a remote X session. I've made [most] of the appropriate changes, and now see the system in an X Windows browser application. I can get a log in prompt on my SLES 8 system, and I put in the 'root' username and the correct password.

But I get the message 'No foreign root login allowed'. I did set DISPLAYMANAGER_ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE="yes" in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager, and tried to follow the instructions in http://en.tldp.org/HOWTO/XDMCP-HOWTO/procedure.html.

What step did I miss?

Thanks!

There are good reasons for denying root remote access to any services and there are very few situations I would agree to bypass that. Before continuing you should consider checking if what you're trying to accomplish can be done in another way or else mention mitigating circumstances that make your box does not turn into swiss cheese. *If this reply annoys you because it doesn't contain a direct answer then consider how having an answer would annoy you if you found out later the box was rooted and nobody warned you about you being the cause...

Hi

Thanks for the reply and the concern. This system is behind a firewall in our lab environment, and it's just easier to use only 'root' for our tests, and not need to create other accounts. So, I do consider myself informed and warned .

Now, about that answer . . . .

Thanks

BTW, if you're referring to a howto and say I've made [most] of the appropriate changes and expect an answer to What step did I miss? it's better to list the changes you *didn't* made. Easier to check as we're low on ESP. Ninetynine percent of the time the first step troubleshooting would be looking in the system (and X) logs for clues. That said I hope recycling this LQ thread can serve as checklist.

If not, then you best list the changes you didn't make and post any *exact* errors you find.

I followed the same steps in http://en.tldp.org/HOWTO/XDMCP-HOWTO/procedure.html that I followed for my other Linux systems. On RHEL 3, RHEL 4 and SLES 9, all is well and I can log in to root. Maybe the problem is that using DISPLAYMANAGER_ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE="yes" in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager is not supported on SLES 8?
