Refresh rates incorrect in X

Hi,

I've recently installed Debian Sarge. During the installation I specified the vertical and horizontal refresh rate limits of my monitor (an LG F700P) which I got from the spec sheet on LG's site. I also specified I wish to have these resolutions available: 1240x1024, 1024x768, 800x600 and 640x480.

My monitor can support 1024x768 @ 100Hz which I want to use, but if I want to change resolutions from the Desktop Preferences -> Change Resolution (in GNOME) I get only choices of 84, 75, 70, 60, 87.

Using xtiming.sourceforge.net I get the refresh rate right, but the size of the screen gets way too small. Meaning that I cannot expand it to fill the monitor area with the on-screen controls.

How can I make X use the real capabilities of my monitor for 1024x768 resolution, possibly, without using a Modeline?
(It does get 1240x1024's refresh rate right - 85Hz)

Additionaly, how do I select a systemwide default resolution (affecting all window managers and login managers)?

Here is my XF86Config-4 (don't have a 'XF86Config'):
Code:
# XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the XF86Config-4 manual page.
# (Type "man XF86Config-4" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xfree86 package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xfree86
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following commands as root:
#
# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.custom
# md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 > /var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
