Redhat 9's autotools broken for apache, mysql, php?

I recently upgraded to Rh9 from Rh7.3 - none of the packages that I compiled myself on Rh7.3 (apache, mysql, php, samba, etc.) will ./configure on Rh9 - there are several errors, complaints about missing macros, macros out of sequence etc. I tried doing aclocal;autoconf;automake to regenerate configure.sh in the source directories of these packages, but these throw about half a page of errors then exit.

The only thing I can surmise is that RedHat has changed their GNU autotools for a broken/buggy new version(s)? How do I get mainstream apps like apache, mysql, samba to configure on RedHat 9?

They all configured and compiled fine on 7.3?

Can I "downgrade" my autotools without breaking my whole RedHat 9 setup?

Thanks!
