Recording Audio with Silence Detection?

Is there anyway in Linux to record audio coming from the Line-In but only trigger the recording when the amplitude exceeds a certain threshold? I want to be able to record audio coming from a radio scanner, but I only want the recording to occur happen when there is audio coming in. I'd also like the recording to continuously append to a single file if possible. Thanks.

I think sox has silence detection, but I'm not quite sure how to use it for that.

Can you guys post the command to record sound with silence detection. I was not able to do it.
