I posted this in the server forum, but seeing this I think the thread belongs here:
Hello,
I have a linux file server with about 10tb of mixed data, files, text, pdf, spreadsheets, music, movies, html/php/css/etc programming files, and more that I am looking for a piece of software that can run on my server and keep and activly updated searchable sortable index. Similar to the way Windows Search can search file contents. SOmething with ether a web interface or other means of searching file contents on the server without telnetting in to the server.
I am having so much trouble finding something that can do this. Hopefully something thats not too hard to configure, but Im just looking for viable options. Any recommendations or suggestions are appreciated.
Not sure how useful that would actually be considering;
Being a file server, the clients will index the mounted file share themselves which client applications will take advantage of. Desktops running Windows 7/8, Gnome, Unity and possibly KDE will do this.
You haven't mentioned if you plan to use this indexed data for any server-based/cloud appllications.
That aside have you had a look at Owncloud? This is a web based application suite that'll run on your server eliminating the need for client-side appications, think of it like a Google Apps you can host yourself. AFAIK Gnome has built-in desktop/application integration for Owncloud too.
