RealPlayer problem

I have just tried installing RealPlayer 10 to work with Mozilla Firefox (followed instructions heres http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux.html#RealPlayer) but I still can't get it to work.

The instruction does not suggest where to install Realplayer so I installed in my home dir???

It say make sure you put a symbolic link to the real player script is in your path, where the script and how??

Sorry to sound such a numpty but I get a little peeved with instruction like this.

I am using deian testing with 2.6.8 kernel and kde 3.3

Thanks in advance

Tim

Let me see I can help. First of all, instructions assume a certain skill level you may not have attained yet. So, roll up you selves and be prepared to do a little digging.

I downloaded the RPM and installed it. It went to the directory as stated in the information line in the instructions. If you go there, there should be a script file called realplay. You can verify that is what it is by going to that directory and doing a command "cat realplay" ( without the quotes ). If the system spills what looks like a dos bat file on your screen, that is the script to invoke RealPlayer.

The next instruction says your system needs to be able to find the script through your path. This varies form system to system, so there is no constant here. To determine what your path is type "echo $PATH" at the command prompt. Here is what it looks like on my system.

echo $PATH
JAVA_HOME/bin:/usr//bin:/bin:/usr/bin::/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/home/cliff/bin

This is the path the system looks for binarys to execute. Note, the realplay script is in /usr/local/RealPlayer. This is not listed in the PATH, so the system does not find it. This can be fixed in many ways. Symlinks are the most recommended way. I'm not sure I can fill you in on the reasons for that. OK, so how to make a symlink. There is a lot of help at your finger tips. The command that creates symlinks is "ln" (once again no quotes). So, "man ln" will give you the man page. "info ln" will also give you a more readable form with some examples. Also check out the Wiki section on the board under commands. Lots of good stuff there.

To make the symlink on my system, here is the command.

ln -s /usr/local/RealPlayer/realplay

I needed to run this command form somewhere in my PATH, because this is where the system looks. So I did a cd (change directory) to the PATH first, and then ran the command. Depending on where you go, you may get a message "permission denied" if you are a regular user. If that happens, switch to SU first, and then create the symlink.

I hope this helps you out.

Hi Camorri

Thanks for the info, although the installation did not go quite as you explained there was enough information for me to read between the lines and get it working. To start with the Realplayer script would not make the folders RealPlayer or mozilla in /usr/local I had to make them manually and then run the installation. Once the installation ran it created the sym links without a problem.

Again thanks

Tim
