Got a strange problem while installing Real Player from their website. In the terminal, I su'd to gain root permissions and attempted to run the bin file using "bash <realplayer file name.bin>
and received the message "unable to run binary file. I changed the permissions to make the file executable with no change. I then tried the .rpm file from the same site and installed it using the package manager. It said that it installed ok and the files are in my /usr directory as I expected to find but the Real player app doesn't show up in the applications menu ANYWHERE.
If I attempt to run rpm -e to remove the program from the console, it says that the program is not there despite the files being in their respective directories. If I attempt to re-install, I get the message "package is already installed" whether I use the GUI or the console.
I tried clicking on the desktop link in the usr/shared/application/ directory to no avail. A button on the taskbar appears and says "opening Realplayer" and the hourglass turns for about 30 seconds before giving up. No Realplayer.
Anyone have the foggiest idea what I'm doing wrong or overlooking?
Thanks in advance for any help you can contribute.
First, try to find the executable. Open a term window, and enter the command: which realplay (note that realplay, not realplayer). It should return something like /usr/bin/realplay.
Check the permissions. Then try to execute from the command line: /usr/bin/realplay.
If it starts up, use your menu editor to add it where you want it.
ok, opened /usr/bin/realplay from the command line and got the message
:/usr/local/RealPlayer/realplay.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libstd c++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[keith@newpc ~]$
also tried uninstall from the command line using the --nodep argument and got the message that the package was not installed
Checked the permissions and it seems that everything having to do with Realplay(er) has root as the owner in the root group but I got the same results trying the above as "root" as well. Changing individual file permissions had no effect. No realplayer yet.

About a second after posting my last reply, my brain cells finally woke up and said "Gee Keith, why don't you actually READ all that gibberish the kernel gave you and figure out what it needs?" It seemed to be telling me, "Hey guy, why don't you try installing the file I can't find and try again?"
PRESTO!
I installed the missing c++ files from the development package and RealPlayer popped up on the first try and it works! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction
