Reading USB mouse data

Hi,

I'm trying to rig up an optical USB mouse to act as a position encoder to display the positiuon of a movable table. I am having difficulty getting the USB mouse to not show up under X as it is interfering with my PS/2 mouse. Does anyone know how to read the optical mouse position data, yet not move the pointer within X? I am running Fedora 1. Thanks
