Quake 3 on 2.6.11 kernels

well, this is giving me a pain... i know quake 3 segfaults (that is, receives signal 11) on kernels >=2.6.8 and the "echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/legacy_va_layout" command run as root really fixes it, but it's not the only problem anymore for 2.6.11 kernels. for some reason, it does the same thing: as i start it, it goes all the way to "ui loaded in 1963008 bytes on the hunk" then goes like "Received signal 11, exiting..." or something and screen flashes a couple of times and that's it. what gives? what else is there to do? please help, i want to be able to stay on the latest kernel version (on which the display on my nvidia card sort of looks a bit clearer.... or might be just me)
oh, i'm using fedora core 3, nvidia geforce fx 5600 and sb live, but these have no actual problems. also i have the latest linuxq3apoint installed (1.32bi think) and works just fine on 2.6.9 (with the echo thing)
help

I have Quake 3 Arena on 2.6.11.12 and get no such seg faults, using "linuxq3apoint-1.32".
Could it be a problem with the install?? or video drivers?
I am using Nvidia's latest 7667 with my 6800gt.
Also I am not using any echo thing.
