QTparted

Has anyone tried this software? Can anyone verify it will work without losing data on an existing Windows XP ntsf partition? Are there any requirements? I really need this for some people who are thinking about switching over to Linux. Thanks for any information. I have it on Knoppix. That will make things easier.

No one is going to give you that guarantee (that no data loss will occur)...your best bet is to burn them Knoppix CDs or to have them backup their important data if they want to try Linux. Even PartitionMagic (which QTParted closely resembles) warns you that there can be data loss.

That being said, I have heard good things about QTParted.

I used qtparted on an ntfs partition and it worked perfectly. It resized it with no data loss.

HOWEVER...I used qtparted on a reiserfs partition and it failed during resize and lost all the data (nothing critical, just the root filesystem. Everything important was in /home, on a separate partition).

So whilst I know it can work brilliantly, it can also fail so I can't guarantee it will work fine for you.

But then again, no other program is guaranteed to succeed - on any OS.

I've used Qtparted on a ntfs partition before and it worked fine.

A backup is recommended when using ANY disk utility. Does not matter if it is commerical product or an open source program. All programs are GIGO.

Just to say I have used qtParted to resize an NTFS filesystem and it worked fine. Only thing I experienced was a message from XP saying it had finished installing something when I first booted after doing the resize. I had to reboot XP but apart from that it worked fine.
