python 2.3 rpm install

I've just installed python 2.3 on RedHat9 ising 'python2.3-2.3-5pydotorg.i386.rpm'

The install seemed to go ok but when I test the system for the Python version # it
comes up as 2.2, and any software dependent on v. 2.3 won't install claiming it can't find 2.3 libraries ie,

Failed dependencies:
libpython2.3 = 2.3-4mdk is needed by python-base-2.3-4mdk
libintl.so.2 is needed by python-base-2.3-4mdk
libpython2.3.so.1.0 is needed by python-base-2.3-4mdk

I fthe 2.3 rpm install was completed, why doesn't the system recognize it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
