PURE-FTP AUTORENAME problem

I am trying to use pure-ftp under xinetd which works fine. The final problem I have is the AUTORENAME_REVERSE_ORDER=1 option. I have configured it so that when I upload the same file twice it creates the second as a xyz.1 .2 .3 and so on - which is great. The problem appears when I need the files to be renamed as 1.xyz 2.xyz and so on. I did a ./configure and then did make AUTORENAME_REVERSE_ORDER=1 as the documentation suggests. this makes no difference.

I have deleted the executables from /usr/local/sbin and confirmed the ones I am using are the new ones, by checking the dates and times. I also stop xinetd before doing the make AUTORENAME_REVERSE_ORDER=1 and then the make install. Once everything is installed i restart xinetd instead it has locked any files.

Can anybody help me because there seems to be no better explanation on how to do this.

TIA
