Question program installing problems (probably simple)

hi ive scoured this forum and couldnt find an answer. im sure its probably something so trivial and you all will laugh, but im just so lost and completely new to linux. ive spent hours tring to fix it.

ok, im using fresh install of ubuntu 5.04 and tryng to put realvnc on it. so i get the stupid tar.gz, manage to extract it to a folder on my desktop. i followed the readme thing and used the script that was included to put some of the other files (im guessing executables?) into the directory...

/usr/local/bin

the script also included a way to put the .man files into a /usr/local/man directory, but i think that failed. this is what readme said to do:

./vncinstall /usr/local/bin /usr/local/man

where vncinstall was the script that they wrote that moved the files for me. please correct me if im wrong.

i did that but added sudo infront of it and the green files seemed to go into /usr/local/bin but i also got this:

"cant install manual pages to /usr/local/man/man1"

(note this is where the computer almost took a dropkick out the 5th story window) why the hell is it trying to put them in man/man1 and not just /man?

but anyway, i did ./vncconfig to try to run them or (if thats what ./ does) but i get an error saying

"error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory"

i poked in there and HAY! its right! theres no file or directory matching that. but now what? i noticed there are a few more files in the folder i extracted on my desktop. do i have to put them anywhere to get this program to work?

please dont be discouraged from answering because of how stupid a question it is. im really just so lost its unbelievable.

This is the whole problem--you started off with a chip on you shoulder... tar.gz files are NOT stupid---they must be treated with respect......

It seems that you have several issues: "can't install" often means a permission issue.

Step -1: Consider upgrading to the latest Ubuntu before fighting all these other battles.

Step 0: Look in the Ubuntu repositories and see if realvnc is there (maybe in one of the alternates like "universe") If it is in a repository, that is the easiest way to install.

Step 1. Fix the stupid Ubuntu "no root" thing, so you don't have to sudo:
sudo passwd root
enter your password
enter the new root password at the prompt

Now, before attempting to install (anything), type "su" to take on root powers.
