Problems with ./configure and gcc

I am trying to install Python, but have had the same problem trying to install other software.

I have put the software into /usr/local/Python-2.3.2

When I try ./configure I get:

Code:
checking for --without-gcc... no
checking for --with-cxx=<compiler>... no
checking for c++... no
checking for g++... no
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C++ compiler default output... configure: error: C++ compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.
When I look at config.log. The offending part seems to be

Code:
configure:1505: checking EXTRAPLATDIR
configure:1520: result:
configure:1533: checking for --without-gcc
configure:1582: result: no
configure:1588: checking for --with-cxx=<compiler>
configure:1609: result: no
configure:1628: checking for c++
configure:1657: result: no
configure:1628: checking for g++
configure:1657: result: no
configure:1628: checking for gcc
configure:1644: found /usr/bin/gcc
configure:1654: result: gcc
configure:1695: checking for C++ compiler default output
configure:1698: gcc    conftest.cc  >&5
gcc: installation problem, cannot exec `cc1plus': No such file or directory
configure:1701: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:
| #line 1674 "configure"
| /* confdefs.h.  */
Line 1674 of 'configure'
======================
ac_compiler_gnu=$ac_cv_cxx_compiler_gnu
cat >conftest.$ac_ext <<_ACEOF
#line $LINENO "configure"
/* confdefs.h. */

I haven't got a clue what is missing, I think gcc is installed. Can anyone help?

you'll need g++ installed too. gcc was initally a straight c compiler but quickly grew to be able to compile almost any modern language via addon librars like g++ for C++

Code:
#urpmi.update -a
#urpmi gcc-c++

Thanks, I now seem to have ./configure working.

gcc-c++ was not on the Mandrake CD's, however I sorted out my rpm contrib source and downloaded it. It took 3 packages totalling about 22mb, which took about an hour on my dial up modem. However it looks like it has worked. Thanks
