it won't boot directly into kde... you have to log on to run anything in linux, including X11

therefore you need to install a graphical logon utility, that would be gdm, kdm, or xdm; take your pick.

im not sure if you mean, boot directly into kde or if you cannot start kde

to start kde, after you login at the prompt type:

startx

Type "init 4" and enter in the terminal. That should startup x and all that. Change the default init level in /etc/inittab to 4.

If you want a graphical login, open up /etc/initab and change the line:

id:3:initdefault:

to read:

id:4:initdefault:

This changes your default runlevel from 3 (command line interface) to 4 (gui). Before you do this make sure X11 works ok.

You also probably want to check /etc/rc.r/rc.4 to make sure it won't open up gnome bu default in run level 4. You can comment out the lines in the beginning that refer to GNOME's gdm session manager.
