My whole life i've been using Windows...but i decided to try linux...getting to the point i just dunno anything about it yet...i've just installed it...and downloaded and installed alllllll available updates...i mainly have three major problems...First,i can't play anyy movie,I used to play them with media player with a divx codec, but this kaffeine wont play any of them, they're mostly DIVX AVIs...second major problem,Mp3s i open them with amarok and it seem like they're playing but i cant get any sound, the time elapsed of the song just keeps counting...Last question,i've just installed WINE,or so it seems...but i cant find it as there's no PROGRAM FILES FOLDER...i heard its a windows emu so i guess its kinda important...i know i seem like a total jerk...But at some point i'll have to learn all of this,i'd really appreciate ur answers...Thanks
Almost forgot,i have another small problem,whenever i reboot...my desktop gets reallyyyy weird,,,kinda compressed,so i've to reset my resolution to 800 x 600 instead of 1024...is that normal ?

Okay, first of all, the easy part--Wine isn't a project launched by itself. You try double-clicking an .exe file--that's when Wine launches. That said, you have two options here for the other problems:
1. Tough it out on these forums. I just saw someone spend about twenty posts helping someone get DVD playback working in SuSE. People here can be very helpful.
2. Get a new distro. I'm not saying that because I have anything against SuSE. In fact, there are a lot of people for whom SuSE is a great distro, and it works for them. I'd say, though, the number one reason to use any distro is hardware detection. Personally, I'd recommend Mepis and Ubuntu, but you could also try Fedora, Mandriva, Xandros, and Blag.
It doesn't mean these distros will have everything working straight out, but you may just have to install a missing codec or something. When you have two or three hardware related problems, it's at least worth considering trying another distro.
Oh,um really sorry i didnt make myself clearer...i dont have any HARDWARE problem at all...i play other files extension like MPeG...and sound DOES work on THE KDE games with the the linux...Plus,um really sorry,i didnt get ur EASY part about wine too...Double click an EXE ?? 8-)

Sorry. I thought maybe your sound wasn't working, among other things. Well, the whole point of Wine is the ability to launch Windows applications in Linux. Windows applications are typically .exe files. For example, Internet Explorer is iexplore.exe, and Microsoft Word is winword.exe.
Oh,i GOt ur point,i shud like go install whatever executable file i need, and it'll just work...?? thanks man, thats a gr8 start...so wud that be enough...shud i just go install Mediaplayer, winamp, everything i need and it will work on linux... ?? and if so,where's the LINUX in all of this...lol...Well,theinterface is enuf for me...thx again...
Wine is still under heavy development, and it doesn't work all the time. Programs that make extensive use of the windows API (meaning they're tied up rather deeply with windows) might not work with wine. The Media Player that comes with windows xp won't run under wine. Neither will the latest version of winamp. In fact, you can safely assume that Most windows programs won't work with wine. Sorry for the bad news, but you need to understand that Linux is Not Windows, and the programs designed for each OS don't work on the other.
That said, you'll find that Linux has programs that can do all you did on windows, and more
If you can hear sounds with the kde games, then maybe amarok isn't configured correctly.
In amarok, click on Settings -> Configure Amarok.
Go over to the 'Engine' section, and in the 'Sound System' drop-down list select 'aRts Engine', then click apply. You should be able to hear sound from amarok now.
For those divx videos, kaffeine maybe doesn't have the codecs. You could install mplayer(which is another video player), that comes with the codecs by default. To do this, run YaST (K Menu -> System -> Yast) which is something like the control panel. From there, click 'Install and Remove Software' , then type mplayer in the search box, then select and install it. After you're done installing, try right-clicking one of those video files and select Open with -> mplayer.
Hey guys,i think something is really wrong other than the AUDIO programs...First Habu,i searched for the mplayer in YAST and cudnt find it,and about the configuration of amorak, didnt work either...the thing is i tried what u suggested ephracis about XMMS,and the same thing Happened,Those visualisations keep moving and the elapsed time too,But still NO SOUND...i tried The Games once again,And there IS sound...
THe Thing is,if that was windows,i'd have used a hammer on the Hard, and everything wud go just fine...lol. So any Ideas what the problem IS ??and how can i get the mplayer ??
You can get the sourcecode and video codecs for mplayer from http://www.mplayerhq.hu but you have to compile them yourself.
The audio problem: Are you sure the sound isnīt muted? Try aumix or alsamixer to check that the master is turned up. If you use xmms check option->preferences->output plugins and then try different audio devices.
Ok,delta simon...i checked my mixer...i even muted it and unmuted it...tried what u said in the output plugin but in vain...NO AUDIO... i downloaded mplayer.rpm and w32 codecs.rpm when i click them something comes up,with two options Install using YAST,or COpy source to YAST,something like that...But neither options does anything...it just opens up the YAST main window...and when i search for mplayer or w32 codecs,no results...Um a totally newbie to linux...shud i just go back to homeland windows,or is this gonna work ? i just need the divx movies to play & mp3s..
When you click on 'install with yast' it should ask you for your root password. After you type that in, a window will come up that tells you it's installing the package, with a progress bar. If this is not happening then there is something wrong. Can you describe what exactly happens, with as many details as possible?
Ok,i have this file,MPlayer-1.0pre7-pm.2.x86_64.rpm in my /home/taz/ i click it,it open up a window with two option in the top,INSTALL PACKAGE WITH YAST & Use directory as source with yast...When i click the first one,RUN AS ROOT window appears and asks for my password,so i enter it and after a second or two,YaST2 Loads up...a TINY window appears,READING PACKAGE INFORMATION,PLEASE WAIT...and then NOTHING happens,as IF I LOADED YaST2 from the k MENU MYSELF...Nothing In the RIght portion of it...and on the left side,a search options...Thats as far as DETAILS can be... i hope thats enuf to solve the problem ...And btw i've tried it with many other .rpm s and the same thing happened...
In that case, were the packages installed? for mplayer, you could check by looking in the k menu -> multimedia -> video player for the mplayer menu entry. If it's there then all is well, you have installed it already. For other rpms you could check in a similar way (if it is a program with a gui, yast would have put an entry in the k menu).
Are you running a 64-bit processor? All the packages with an x86_64 are for 64 bit processors and won't work on 32-bit processors. If you're running a 32-bit processor, you'll have to use the i386 packages. Just checking , because it might be a reason yast isn't installing...
First of all,i don't even have a VIDEO player directory in my K menu now ...but yes,i'm running a 32 bit processor  but i dunno where to search or download for the proper rpms...GOD the only thing um getting to work is this firefox...BTW,i just noticed something,I NEVER HEARED SYSTEM SOUNDS SINCE I INSTALLED THE LINUX...I guess LINUX comes with SYSTEM SOUNDS ...CLICKS,LOG OFF,SHUT DOWN...u know what i mean ? wud that be a bigger problem... i read something about it but all the solution was entering some commands, which i don't even knoww how to ENTER THEM,AND WHERE TO ENTER THEM...A guy on this forum had this NO SYSTEM SOUNDS,but he CUD play mp3s ...so another one told him to TYPE.......................... rings a bell ??
