Problem with connection within Gentoo

I've installed gentoo and everything is fine until I reach the following step:

Code Listing 2.36: Use mirrorselect and set MAKEOPTS

mybox ~ # emerge mirrorselect

When trying to, emerge mirrorselect, there is always a problem connecting and I get a message like, no route to host and/or error resolving name or something like that. I had no problem downloading portage or the stage 3 file. Any guesses on what the problem could be?

See if your routing table has a default route with the command:

netstat -nr

If there is no destination 0.0.0.0 (the default route), then add one. Of course, use your actual router address or ISPs address as appropriate.

route add default gw 192.168.1.1

Nope. That didn't do it because gentoo said the connection already existed.
