problem in logging through usual user name

Hello everyone,

I had a user account on my open suse10.2 by the name of saurabhg and some password. The strange thing is that it is not showing the general "log in failed" error which means the password is correct and yes it is correct, i am sure. After entering the password, the system processes for some time and then again brings me to the logging screen.

Please someone help. Right now i am logging through root everytime.

And one more question, although it is from other topic. I want to install Ubuntu7.04 as well on my system, so do i need to create a separate swap partition for it or the one for open suse will be enough as a common swap.

Thanks in advance

You don't need a second swap file. The second installation will use the swap file of the first.

To double check if your password is OK, log into a virtual terminal. You may have a problem with your KDE or Gnome installation or with X.

Also check your logs at a time when you tried to log in and see what turns up there.

To go to your virtual terminal, press CTRL+ALT+F1 when you see your graphical log-in screen, it will switch to text mode. To go back to your graphical log-in, press CTRL+ALT+F7

Alternatively, you could choose to log into the failsafe window manager (provided it is installed). That option should be available to you on your graphical log-in screen.

On occasion, it has helped me to find out why KDE didn't start. I logged into the failsafe window manager, then opened a terminal, and typed in startkde. The beauty of that is that you will see all the start-up messages that are normally hidden.
