Problem downloading Linux Mint 17 1.5 G iso file

I tried using Chrome and Slimbrowser to download Linux Mint 17 cinnamon.

From this site:
http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=190

Slimbrowser has its own download mgr which is usually fast but I had it on all night but it would not work.

On Chrome I got an RAR file, but I do not know if that is the same as an iso file for burning to dvd.

I have Linux Mint 10 that was easy to download and burn. If I can't get LM 17, I will stay with this one but I am guessing it is best to use the latest possible versions.

My system is Win 7 ultimate 64-bit (not too happy with it), 6 gb RAM, CPU i7, 500 gb.

Any help appreciated.

youhave to click through to one of the mirrors, or use a bittorrent client for the torrent file.

I have qbittorrent as the torrent client. But you have to get the actual iso from a torrent website like kickass or pirate bay. Kickass is out of business, and I could not connect to Pirate Bay for some reason. Chrome may be blocking it and for sure IE would.

I tried downloading with both Slimbrowswers download mgr and Chromes download mgr Chrono.

Now after at least 4 days, I have 2 RAR files of LM 17. I did not think I could get them.

I think I can get the iso out of the RAR. I have started another thread on this.

I use Firefox and it just works. Pick a mirror site and download. Any time I ever have a problem would be either because I need to unblock scripts (having the Add-on "NoScript") or something is actually wrong with my Internet connection or provider.

I don't try to use torrents too much because they're blocked from work, many times blocked on free/public access points, and if the torrent is not too well seeded, it may take too long and I'd just rather grab the ISO file from a download mirror.

I don't know which Country you are in, but both University of Kent UK Mirror Service & Bytemark Hosting offer iso files for downloading.

I tried downloading it through torrent. I used qbittorent as the download client, then went to pirate bay. I was using Chrome. The download kept stopping at just a few kb and saying completed, when the LM 17 iso is 1.5 g.

Finally I just keep my computer on all night downloading with the slimbrowser download manager. I now have a RAR file of LM 17.2 plus another RAR OF LM 17.1 that must have also succeeded.

Since I have the file now, I may be able to mark this thread resolved.

Thanks to ugjka, ondoho, fatmak, and rtmistler for your help.

this is not true.
the .torrent file is on the linuxmint website itself, and you have to load it into (open with) a bittorrent client like qbittorrent.
linuxmint also provides its own trackers.

kickass is not out of business. (try http://kat.cr/ ) - neither is piratebay.
my isp (in fact, all isps in my country) blocks piratebay, but not kickass.

as above
NO - not true
who told you that -- slap them in the face with a glove and challenge them to a dual

technically microsoft windows10 updates ARE NOW a type of torrent

as to downloading a RAR. iso images ARE NOT rar compressed archives !

if you are getting a rar and NOT a .ISO
you are likely getting a VIRUS from a Chinese or Russian or some other BAD GUY taken over site
( did you by chance click on some odd shady advertising on some site )

MS's internet explorer HAS NOTHING !! -- ZERO !!! 0 !!!! to do with a "torrent"
internet explorer can not even Download one if it wanter to -- NO SUPPORT!!!
-- again
who told you that -- slap them in the face with a glove and challenge them to a dual at 20 paces

you use a torrent client like Vuse or utorrent
internet explorer has NOTHING to do with a torrent and can NOT block a torrent client

you save the *.torrent file and then OPEN said torrent file using a torrent client
the client then downloads the iso ( mint17 should take about 5 to 20 minutes on a 25 meg cable connection depending on traffic )

the kernel.org mirror for the iso
http://mirrors.kernel.org/linuxmint/...amon-64bit.iso
for the torrent
http://torrents.linuxmint.com/torren...it.iso.torrent
you save the torrent file

^^This is pretty much why I said I don't use torrent. Waste of time. I will grant that they officially provide torrents for the distributions, but bottom line they also officially provide download sites.

What this is all boiling down to is the quality of the OP's internet.

Well, in this case my regular downloads did not work but pirate bay was the only place I could GET A COPY OF LM 17.2. (At the time I had not seen the torrent link on the official LM website.) Plus the torrent download through qbittorent is itself a download manager better than I was getting using Chrome. In addition, the CHECKSUMS WERE A MATCH. . That takes care of wicked Russian/Chinese angle. After I uninstalled winRAR, the distro was coming through as iso not RAR.

maybe it was because you chose a south african mirror, but you are actually halfway around the globe?

good that you realized that now.

the distro always came through as .iso, it's just that windows was trying to tell you what to do with it (i.e. open with winrar).

You are correct here but it took me awhile to find out that I should try changing the DNS numbers. I put in the google DNS servers. After I did that, the internet started acting normally.

this is something new. I thought when you found the file you don't click on the file but instead on something like "save this torrent"or some symbol or other, not the file name itelf.

But you seem to by saying
1. save the file itself
2. open the client and find the file through their search box.

In any case, I am wary of pirate bay since I got a virus masquerading as a repair scan tool from there.
