Plz help connecting to internet using Debianrc2??


Hi! i've installed debian successfully. Now I'm having problems connecting to internet. Whenever i try to visit a webpage on Konqueror webbrowser it gives an error message unknown host. My ifconfig looks like below(also i assigned the inet addr to eth0 by the ifconfig coomand) i even started it using ifconfig eth0 up but no luck:

start with:

do either/both work?

I tried ping google.com

it says unknown host

and ping 216.239.39.99

says:

wrote 216.239.39.99 64chars ret=-1
ping:sendto: Network is unreachable

And it continuously print the same thing again and again. So i had to kill the process by pressing ctrl-Z.

yeah-- ping'll go until you kill it, there's an option (-c 5) which'll give it a count of 5, meaning after 5 pings it stops... it could be -c 10 for 10 counts -- you get the point.

given your IP is .102, i'm guessing it is dynamically assigned, is this true?

aaannd... given that you are able to reply to this thread, i assume your network is in good shape, and this problem can be limited to your linux pc...

i tried doin' ping 216.239.39.99 -c 5
it says

5packets transmitted; o packets received 100% packet loss.

And route gives:

Kernel IP routing table
Destination GAteway GEnmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.123.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0

Yeah my 2 computers are behind a router. One is with windowsxp and the other one is debian.

I believe my ip is dynamic.

And also my internet connection is dsl. Is this causing problem?
Does anyone had any problem like mine?

Just learned this

Edit /etc/network/interfaces to read

iface eth0 inet dhcp
then enter
