Plug-ins missing

Certain graphical e-mails show a cross. When clicked, it displays the message "This page contains information of type (application/_____) that can only be viewed with the appropriate Plug-in." The blank may contain "x-java-vm," "x-shockwave-flash," or "plain-text." I am using RH 8.0 and Mozilla 1.0, but I was getting similar messages on my Windows machine before I stopped using it. I have tried to select plug-ins from lists that have come up, but I never seem to get anything downloaded that way. And I'm not interested in paying for them.
