Play Audio CD via IDE (possible?)

Hello. My friend has just installed Redhat 9. He was previously able to play CDs under Windows XP. XMMS plays MP3s just fine, so his sound is configured correctly, but no sound comes out when cdplayer runs.

I opened his box, and low and behold, there is no audio cable from the CD drive! So, obviously his player in XP was reading the disk via IDE to play it. I have suggested that he get an audio cable, but is there a Linux program that will play via the data connection?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

i'm not aware of individual progs that definitely support DAE playback, but as grip uses cdparanoia to rip dvd's, it possibly uses it for playback too....

Dunno about that Chris,

Whenever I've used grip I've never managed to use it to play any audio cd's unless I direct it towards my cdrw drive (and it's audio cable to the sound card)!

Not sure how the latest version of xmms would fair, isn't it supposed to be able to pick up a direct digital input via /dev/dsp (still dunno if that wouuld mean that you don't need an audio cable though )

regard

John

my computer doesn't have cd to soundcard cable and I'm able to use xmms for cd playback using the "Digital audio extraction" for the CD audio player configuration. BTW I'm using xmms 1.2.8
