PHP not producing output - Apache2 on Gentoo

I'm running Gentoo on a Compaq Evo n600c.

I have emerged apache2 mod-php4, and php.

Apache2 is serving the web pages, but any PHP code is completely ignored. When trying the page with the CLI PHP, I get the following error message:

php: error while loading shared libraries: php: unsupported version 29300 of Verneed record

Is this error message likely to be linked to the PHP module in apache2 not working? If so, which libraries need to be updated?

Any ideas, potential solutions, crazy theories would be appreciated at this point.

How do you make Apache aware of PHP? The "Gentoo way" is adding this line to /etc/conf.d/apache2:
Code:
APACHE2_OPTS="-D PHP4"

Thanks - added that to the file, restarted apache2, but still no joy. The feeling that I've left out something blindingly simple / obvious is beginning to steal over me - but just no idea what.
