Hello!
I just found this site and it is just what I needed.
I have had a computer for about a year and a half now but I still consider myself to be fairly green.
My problem is this- I just got a copy of Mandrake 7.1 and tried to install it on the same hard drive as win98 and in the process managed to erase everything on the drive. What a mess (backups didn't work, etc.). I just got my machine up and running again but I'm afraid to try it again without some more info. I have never partitioned my drive before except the pre-windows installation that pretty well does it by itself.
I need some fairly detailed info on the subject and wondered if any of you could help me out or give me a link to it.
Well, Didn't you install Partition Magic that comes with Mandrake 7.1? You install it for Windows 98 and then run the program, it basically walks you right through it. I also chose not to use BootMagic you will see why in a sceond. Once that is done just start the Mandrake install and make sure it writes to the right partition. I can't recall what mine was, I think it was HDB, and just use the default "/" mount point. When you get to the part that asks you where do you want to install the boot sector, I choose to install it to the floppy FD0. This way your boot sector is not affected at all on your windows partition, so if at worst you only lose Linux not anything from windows. So know if I want to boot into Linux I just insert the floppy into the drive and thats it. Hope this helps...!!
The copy I got was a free one given to me that did not come with P.M. But in the meantime I did get it figured out! Now for the fun of trying to configure everything etc. That part looks like it could be a real treat.
