Unhappy PArtition Help, then install Gentoo


I was just wondering but how do u get a partition? i have WInxp and i have Partition Magic, but when i createa linux partition(or any other kind for that matter) it doesnt seem to actually do it...is there another way??after i do the partition im goin to install gentoo

I am not sure what you mean. One common newbie misconception is that partitioning also creates a file system. The file system in your new partition will be created by the gentoo installer.

Just free up some space using Partition Magic. In that free space you can then create partitions during your Gentoo installation. The installation guide is very verbous and contains pretty much everything you need to know, at least everything you will need to type (with some obvious differences between the examples and your own setup, like partition names and numbers).

If you havent used any type of Linux before (I figure by your post that you havent) I would not go for Gentoo. Gentoo is a bit up the latter on the learning curve thingy. I would recommend SuSE 9.0 or MDK9.2 as they are easy to install and easy to configure.

Also before you shrink your windows partition it's a good idea to defrag first
