Package for online video capture

Hi all,

Ubuntu 12.04 desktop 64bit / Debian 7.3 desktop 64bit

I'm searching for a package to capture online video such as Youtube and video on newspaper etc.

Google search brought me "Guvcview" on following links;
Anything better than Cheese for video capture?
http://askubuntu.com/questions/18600...-video-capture

Are there any other recommendation? Thanks

Rgds

I use two programs for capturing youtube videos; first: "smplayer" has an optional dependency called "smtube" it will download videos as long as they're not encrypted (like Vevo) if they are. I use a very powerful command line program called "youtube-dl" but once you get an encrypted video downloaded you'll have to run it through Handbrake or something if you want to play it on anything besides your computer. Smplayer will play it without decrypting.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

smplayer and youtube-dl are on Ubuntu 12.04 repo.

http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/
http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/youtube-dl

Handbrake - whether you meant;
HandBrake
The open source video transcoder
http://handbrake.fr/
?

Can I select the section of video to capture NOT the complete video?

I expect more than download video. Download Helper can do the job. I expect to capture selected section of the video.

Yes, I meant HandBrake. You'll have to go to handbrake.fr and follow the instructions for installing the ppa, for it is not likely to be in the stock ubuntu repos.

Now, HandBrake is not a linear editor, just a transcoder. If you are wanting to cut out a section of video and then export that into a file, I recommend "kdenlive."

Hi,

Kdenlive
http://www.kdenlive.org/

It is on Ubuntu 12.04 repo. What I expect is "the package works as a recorder". I can start/stop it manually. So I can stop recording those unwanted sections.
