Hi, under gentoo after the last update, the opera window doesn't update after a few seconds of showing itself. I have to move the cursor over an icon or anything that changes appearance to make it update. This is very frustrating when in the middle of typing a URL, the window stops updating and I'm typing "blind". While playing flash/HTML5 movies this is also quite frustrating

This is under gentoo,KDE 4.6.5, mesa 7.10.3, opera 10.50. I disable compositing because performance is dreadful (Intel graphics) on my external screen, which I use most of the time. For now I've worked around the issue by changing the compositing backend from OpenGL to XRender (where the performance is acceptable), but I'd like to disable compositing altogether.

My theory involves the XDamage extension, but I have no idea about how to work from there.

Hi I work for Opera.

We have had one internal user with the same issue. He was running that latest Fedora on a Lenovo Thinkpad L520, which uses "Intel HD Graphics 3000" according to the spec sheet (lspci reports it as "00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 0116 (rev 09)") and was using the xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.14.0 driver.

This driver was installed and configured by Fedora during install. Just like you, with compositing off he saw the problems you saw but with compositing on there where no issues.

However, when we setup two more Thinkpad L520 with identical hardware configuration and the same distro (and distro version) we could not replicate the issue on either of those machines. As our internal support team had already encountered graphics card problems with some other Thinkpad L520s (unrelated to Opera) we put this issue down to bad hardware as well.

Hence my temptation would be to state that you too have a hardware problem. I could be wrong of course but at least for our internal user we would able to discount pretty much everything else.

As to why you only see the problem in Opera, I suspect some other apps might actually show problems but not so frequently. Possibly something about our painting behaviour manages to highlight these issues more easily.

If you have any other thoughts or ideas however, I am open to them. Having seen this on my colleagues machine I understand how unworkable the situation is.

Out of interest what Graphics card do you have and which X11 driver are you running, including version?

running the intel-2.14.0 driver, kernel 2.6.39.xorg-server-1.10.2 The chip is I think its a 4500MHD.
It would seem that this only comes up on my external screen (connected via D-SUB, 1600x1200), haven't tried HDMI yet.
