Question OpenOffice vs. non-root users

G'day guys!

I have a strange phenomenon here that I can't
get sussed...

I installed OpenOffice a while ago, and it works
fine (as such) ... the odd thing is, for root it takes
about 15 seconds to start-up which I find acceptable.

Non-root users however have to wait between 90
and 120 seconds 'til it's finally up... any ideas what
might cause this phenomenon, or, even better, how
to solve it?

Cheers,
Tink

How did you set it up? I just timed mine on my user account, 20 seconds. What version are you using?

And, how do you have your users start it, what wm are they using vs what wm is root using?

I run my users on Flux, so that might make a difference. I just switched to my root account, it opens up in ~8 seconds...

Don't know why though...

Did you setup the users on a workstation or local install? And same for root, workstation or local?

I setup all of them as workstations, takes up less room.

What are your system specs?

Cool

First realease, 1.0 ... just downloaded 1.0.1, will try that later

On that machine I'm using KDE 2.2 that came with
slack 8.0 for all users... starting from KMenu

Not quite as significant a difference as in my case ...
just only > 100% ;)

Doing the default installation, then a workstation setup
for all users (including root)

Athlon 600, 256Megs, old ATI all in Wonder 8Megs...

Maybe it's because anything root does gets "niced" to the top? I am just grabbing at ideas here...

Also, I guess it would be "relative" not really blamed on the wm, that they should go at relatively the same difference for starting up. Meaning it might be less time, but will be the same difference in % between the 2 times.

I am running 1.0.1, but I don't think you'll really see a huge change, on the other hand, it'd be worth a shot I'd guess.

To see if there is "nicing" going on, open up top when you start OO with both users, and see if that is actually happening.

Oh and if I am wrong on what I think nicing is I mean maybe the process is getting higher priority when it is ran as root.

Cool

OpenOffice can be a real headache to install for users group. Your OO is probably looking for a lib/depend but can't load it because you're not root, so open something else (if it's working, you are lucky, mine was crashing very often because of that, before I realize it was a permission problem).

So the best way is to reinstall the entire progs... Unisntall the current one, then AS USER, create the directory where you want to install it.
Change right to the tar.gz file, untar it as user. OO will try to untaring to "install" directory, be sure your users have the right to create where it try to create it (if not, create "install" dir before and then change the right to give your users full right). Then, enter install and run the setup.

Hello again ...

...and thanks for all suggestions!

For some reason the simple upgrade solved the problem,
and also sped the starting process in general up :}

Uninstalled 1.0, installed 1.0.1, and "e voila" it
is usable in 10 to 12 seconds for everyone ;)

Cheers,
Tink

There is a version in the OpenOffice.org CVS with a "create PDF" button.
Of course you can make PDFs in OO by printing to PDF now, but the quality of trailing pages is not good (only the first page of any document comes out well).

I hear Windows users talking about purchasing Adobe this and Adobe that and when I tell them it's money for old rope the stare at me and say "weirdo" under their breath.

Some day I will conquer the world WiTh uNiX PdF WrItErS ! ! ! ! ! ! Hahahahahhahahahaha.
