openMosix or program level cluster?

which scenario is likely to yield best results with dvd::rip and cinelerra?

1.openMosix cluster and recompile programs with flag set for many cpu's?

-or-

2.use clustering features in each program (they each have clustering of sorts installed)?

thanks...

I don't know how dvd ripping can be distributed over more than one cpu. It seems to me that dvd ripping can only be done in a single thread on the machine that is directly connected to the dvd drive.

I don't know about Cinerella. I can tell you that any application has to be multithreaded in order to make use of Open Mosix over several computers. Whether the application can distribute its tasks over several computers without Open Mosix is the question. Is that what you mean in question 2?

I would guess that if an application can distribute its tasks over several computers without Open Mosix then that may perform better than using Open Mosix. The only way to know for sure is to try both ways and record performance benchmarks.

A lot of "is this better than that" questions are better answered by experiment than by polling other people's opinions.

well my questions were looking at two different ways to cluster the two applications we use occssionally (we have plans to make much heavier use of them in the future).

1. Both apps support native clustering (it is built in, though there may be prerequisites like NFS).
2. Both "may" support openmosix or other parallel computing platform.

I was polling public opinion to see if anyone had a wealth of experience with either app. In the absense of that, I guess I will have to do my own testing as you mentioned. I am rather new to parallel computing, so will have to learn a bit about that before attempting #2 (#1 shouldn't be too difficult, dvdrip breaks the parallel part down and clusters it, then switches back to single for the serial part...reassembling the video. not sure how cinellera works it, but i'm sure it's cool. think it even sets up its own clustering file system).

If I have any major breakthroughs I'll definitely post them here .

Cheers
