Opening putty leaves moving icon for annoyingly long time / Slackware

Hi all,

I hope this question fits best in Software section rather than Slackware section.

Host Details :-
OS - Slackware 13.37 - 32 bit
Kernel - Stock/2.6.37
DE - KDE upgraded to 4.6.5 (Provided by Alien)

Issue :-
I installed latest putty from pkgs.org selecting correct 13.37 x86 version. Now, I created a panel icon for putty and whenever I launch it from there, it opens fine but alongside leaves that up/down moving panel icon for at least 30 seconds. Now that's not a big concern but bit annoying.

Point to note here is, if launched as normal user from command line, it works fine with no trail. Launching as root throws gtk warning and quits.

Quote:
root@pinguslack:~# /usr/bin/putty
No protocol specified

(putty:25041): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0
Have anyone experience this issue before and any clues?

Screenshot is attached with the icon in red circle.

Regards.

Are you running a root desktop session or are you launching putty as root inside an unprivileged user desktop session?
The "cannot open display :0" message makes me think you're in the second case.
Try running
Code:
xhost +si:localuser:root
as the unprivileged user before launching putty.
You can read something more on the matter here.

Hello, thanks for the reply.

I'm logged in as a non root user. I created the panel item manually which is running /usr/bin/putty to open putty once clicked, that should be as non root because running /usr/bin/putty from root inside that non root user doesn't open putty at all as I mentioned. I'm not at my Slack box right now, I'll cross check it once at it.

Regards.

To remove the bouncing icon for a single application, you should edit its launcher icon, then go into (note that I'm translating names on the fly from my italian KDE desktop, so they may be slightly different from what you'll see) its Application settings tab, hit "Advanced options" and remove the tick from "Enable start notification".
To remove if for all applications, you should check the notification settings inside KDE control center.

Kick me! That did the trick. Though it was 'enable launch feedback' box here.
Thanks a bunch. Rep added.
