When I run an OpenGL program the result of cout<<glGetString(GL_VERSION); is 1.3 Mesa 7.2. I found on Mesa web site that version 7.2 supports OpenGL 2.1, but this depends on the driver. I also read somewhere that MESA is using the DRM driver if it is hardware accelerated. Do you know whether radeon.ko kernel module supports OpenGL 2.1? I was not able to find documentation about it. Also is the RadeonHD driver as a X.org driver has something to do with OpenGL acceleration?
It depends on the software... but also depends on the hardware... My gpu only supports openGL 2.0 I believe... But GLX is different form GL? I'm not sure, but the Nvidia 8800GT supports 2.0 but my GLX shows as 1.4... Might be software, might be hardware restrictions. Either way if you do a new update and it doesn't change then it's probably hardware that is keeping you from reaching the goals. What you really have to ask yourself is, is the detail at acceptable levels? If your GLX runs at something you can accept then don't really question it, leave that up for the developers.
