Post OOo Spell checker on Red Hat and Fedora (FIXED PLEASE READ)

Hi,

If you're having problems getting the spell checker in OpenOffice.org to work on Red Hat and Fedora based machines and you want it fixed, you have come to the right place!

THIS POST IS QUITE LONG AND IF YOU JUST WANT THE ANSWER THE JUST SCROLL DOWN A BIT!!!

P.S. The may work on other distros having the same problem.

OK, Here is the story so far:

Your using one of the OOo programs to write a document and you see red lines, indicating a spelling error. When you right click it the whole P.C. Freezes, most people would instantly reach for the button marked “Reset” but there is no need to do this, about 5 minutes later a list of spelling corrections will appear!

But that is really annoying!

The reason for this is because Red Hat is aimed at anyone speaking any language! So they install ALL the dictionaries. This overloads OOo and causes it to hang until they have all loaded!

!!!THE ANSWER!!!

Find your dictionary.lst file (usually in “/usr/lib/ooo-1.1/share/dict/ooo”) here you'll see something like this:

Code:
DICT bg BG bg_BG
DICT ca ES ca_ES
DICT da DK da_DK
DICT de AT de_AT
DICT de CH de_CH
DICT de DE de_DE
DICT el GR el_GR
DICT en AU en_AU

HYPH ru RU ru_RU
HYPH sk SK sk_SK
HYPH sl sl
HYPH sv SE sv_SE
HYPH uk uk
THES de DE th_de_DE
THES en US th_en_US
THES hu HU th_hu_HU
As you can see this is far to many dictionaries to be loaded

Try shortening it to something more like this!

Code:
DICT en GB en_GB
DICT en US en_US
DICT en GB en_GB
DICT en US en_US
HYPH en GB en_GB
HYPH en US en_US
THES en US th_en_US
Restart OOo, make a spelling mistake, right click

Now the box should instantly appear!

Hope this helps

Ian
