getting that error when trying to startx after a kernel upgrade. i installed newest vid drivers for nvidia and no love there so backed em down to an older driver set.
i have double, triple, quadruple checked my XF86confg-4 file and it is exactly as it was before i started everything.
even going back to the older working kernel (2.4.27 i think it is) i can not get back into x.
in dire need of help as this is my media box and kids and my wife are wanting to watch DVDs and movies. no can do without X running.
That's not a kernel problem, most likely that file or something related to it got corrupted. I would just reinstall xserver-xfree86 and see if that fixes your problem.
no love. apt-get remove and it also took out the windows server, then apt-get install both of them again, ran dpkg reconfig xserver-xf86...... and still getting the following:
Code:

We strongly encourage the use of the "reportbug" package and command
to ensure that bug reports contain as much useful information as
possible.

There is no error reported here. The log gives you the line symbols that are used, and an error will be reported with an EE prefix.
You are missing some fonts or some such and that is what the message you are getting tells you. It won't stop X from running.
Since you have the NVidia drivers, most likely the problem is there. Look in your nvidia-install.log which will be wherever your distro puts it; in my distro it is in /var/log
nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log'

Make sure you don't have the Riva driver loaded; you most likely don't unless it is compiled into your kernel (which would be a bad thing to do).
Then fix up those symlinks. That'll keep you from booting X and I was expecting to see something like that. I have had the same trouble (different file names) on my Mandrake 10.1 installation and the solution is to fix up the symlinks.
You also might have some difficulties associated with /etc/modules or /etc/conf.modules or /etc/modules.conf (depending on your distro). Look there to see if there are any problems.
The problem I have is that I don't have your distro and my file names are somewhat different. Sadly, I am presently working on my WinXP laptop, not my Linux box. The built-in network card on the Linux box died in an electrical storm yesterday. I did drop another network card in, and I reconfigured, but presently I have some issues associated with the reconfigure.
I just tried to SSH into my Linux box in order to root around and get the details to solve your problem but the SSH connection failed. So, to dig in detail into how I dealt with my problem - which is the same as your problem - I have to go to a different location. Since I am comfortable in front of the TV, I'll do that later and not now.
WRT the symlinks, the error message tells you that you have some 6629 code present and some 7174 code present. You need to make this consistent, and you need to make sure that all the symlinks point to the same library. Look in /usr/lib and in /usr/local/lib for the relevant libs; you should probably have the correct lib in /usr/lib and you should symlink to it from /usr/local/lib and from everywhere else.
From the error message, you need to locate this file
Code:
libXvMCNVIDIA.so.1.0.6629
and make sure your symlinks in /usr/lib, /usr/local/lib, and /usr/X11R6/lib all point to it.
Check for symlinks to the 7174 version of this lib as well, and if you find them change them. That should fix you up.
If you don't know how to symlink, post back and we'll see what we can do about it.
Now see if your system will run X. If it does, then you can try adding the options back one at a time until it no longer works.
If it doesn't, change this line:
Option "NvAGP" "2"
to this:
Option "NvAGP" "1"
The AGP options are as follows:
0 : disable AGP
1 : use NVIDIA's internal AGP support, if possible
2 : use AGPGART if possible
3 : use any agp support (try AGPGART, then NVIDIA's AGP)
It is possible you have a problem with AGPGART.
I'd start with that font line though; that is consistent with the errors you are receiving and others have encountered the same problem.
