Ok i downloaded it. /need/help!

Ok, MPlayer-1.0pre1.tar.bz2 is on my desktop. What do i do with this thing?! Also, I'm running mandrake 9.0 and was wondering where i could find answers to my questions for myself instead of constantly bugging everyone on these forums. I just got linux and i just want to know what are the steps for installation of things! Do i use konsole?
