Ok, here it gose.
Tryed to instqll Mandrake 8.0 on my HP laptop running winME
using lnx4win.
Got my laptop trashed in avery way, lost all of my info and installs.
Now, I am rebuilding my laptop with Win2000 and RedHat 7.1
and have question.
What the primary bootable partion should be?
Fat16/32 or NTFS for w2k
If security is the most important part, NTFS is more secure. Plus if the partition is >512Mb, W2K will be faster.
Read/writes from Linux > NTFS is (AFAIK) still xperimental, W2K > Ext2 support good.
If security doesnt matter at all, Id set a FAT32 pri, both W2K and linux will have no prob read-writing & can be started from it, but W2K is hoggin the MBR like crazy on my box. (u know u can have up to max 4 pri's on one HD)
Ok I have 10GB HD on my laptop
Curently partitioned as 275Mb HP partition none editable
5400MB Win2000 partition as FAT32, and secondary FAT32 none formated partition at 3851MB
Win2000 is working fine.
Now I am installing RedHat 7.1 in graphical mode and it ask me to partition the drive with the messege that automatic partitioning failed becose there is not sufficient space on the drive. any setting I try with druid it will not let me go tothe next step.
can anybody help?
Thank you for reply , that exactly what it was.
I kind of figured it out after several tries that the extended partition was taking the space. After I removed it from the dos boot, I got the automatic partitioning fiture and all was installed and working ok.
However I think that my boot manager is LILo not Win INI since I am getting the redhat boot screen wich is ok I don't realy care what booting what , however I know that I can change the way it looks. as of right now it tell me boot linux or DOS I want to make it Linux or Win2000.
How woud I do that?
I need a lot of help with linux. I am lost totaly. my network dose not work and my modem either. it is a built in modem just like the NIC but my nic is found and installed but my modem is not. Go figure :-)
Uhm. Does it start a DOSprompt or W2K when u choose DOS?
If its just the -name- then open up /etc/lilo.conf, look for a line
label = DOS
and change it to read
label = W2K
Save, quit.
Run Lilo with -t (test) -v(verbose) to see if all would run correct, and if it does execute lilo without the -t parameter to let Lilo use the new config.
If its DOS that starts (weird) then add W2K to the bottom of lilo.conf like this where /dev/hda1 is the partition that W2K uses:
other = /dev/hda1
label = W2K
bout the modem part I can allmost -smell- a winmodem from here :-]
tell us the brand, type & any details u can come up with. its quite easy to determine if its an Expensive Paperweight or a Real Hardware Modem That Will Rock :-]
Everything starts ok. if I choose Dos the win2k starts no problem . so it is just the name. I am totaly new in lunix that is why so many questions . I am a window/DOS person and have been for 8 years. I need Umix/Lunix becose I am in college learning C programing on Unix and want to do the homework at home not in the lab. since we use VI editor I figured I build a lunix machine dualboot with w2k and do everything on it. I am olso VB programmer so it will be my learning and development machine in one.
I am building it out on my P3 700 mhz HP Pavilion Laptop.
modem and nertwork card are built in ( non removable )
NIC Is : "Action EN2242 Series MiniPCI Fast Ethernet Adapter "
Ah... Another VI Hero... (lets nuke all those Emacs nimps)
Dont waste ure time on the ES56CVM-PI, its an unsupported Winmodem. The Accton should be ok tho it needs "some" work :-]
