Novell SLE: C++, Java and MySQL

i'm new to linux (just installed Novell's SuSE Enterprise Server). i've ff. questions:
1. can't compile programs (though java command works fine). what is the problem?
2. how do i start and use mysql?
3. the ff. program does not compile with g++. why?

Hi,

You can probably start MySQL with the command
/etc/init.d/mysql start

Though if you want a newer version or support you should get an RPM from dev.mysql.com (disclaimer: I'm a MySQL employee).

As for the C++ program, it is hard to diagnose without the exact error message. My guess would be that you have not installed libstdc++ (the standard C++ libraries).
