No sound on Red Hat 8.0

OS: Red Hat 8.0

Whenever I log into into the KDE(Bluecurve) Desktop, I get the following error message in a pop up window.

+---------------------------------------------------------------------+
Error while initializing sound driver.
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
+----------------------------------------------------------------------+

Restarting the sound server also presents the same message as above.

Some time back, I had tried lots of things to get sound working on my system. I had succeeded to get sound working on my system. Now I have formatted my HDD & have re-installd Red Hat 8.0. Problem is, I had tried so many different things that I dont know which action of mine got the sound working.

I had managed to get sound working with OSS Drivers. So I expect the answer to my querries in that direction.

I wud be glad if someone could post also the section of Linux architecture which gets the sound working. Especially about modules, drivers and the relevant system files to edit.

Hello Siddhartha,

You get the error because the module for your soundcard isnt loaded in memory. Just go thru the thread below..and I am sure you'll get your sound working....The procedure is the same for both Red Hat 8 and 9.

By the way, where's this BVCE located? I am asking this coz I've one B.V. located just a KM away frm my place...

Regards,

amit
