No PCM through ALSA

I'm running Slackware 9.1 right now, I'm quite content with it, except for my sound.
I manage to play audio cd's, but everything else fails: If I want to play a WAV or MP3, the first 45 ms will loop for about three times in a row, with an eternal silence after it (that is, until you press the 'stop' button)

ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1055:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Permission denied

btw: The above message does not apply to the root user, who also gets the three-times-loop-and-then-quit error.

The Linux Sound HOWTO told me that the looping problem occurs because of something like a wrong IRQ ...
Does anyone know how to set a card's IRQ?
