no colors in movies

I can't see any colors in dvd, avi, mpg etc. I have tested with VLC, Totem, MPlayer. IT wasn't like this before. I must have screwd up something. I have tested to install codecs but it dosn't seem to work. Should I reinstall linux?

if it is on all the format's you've listed in both programs then the only common thing between them i can think of is the video output, which i'd assume to be Xvideo. if you run mplayer and use x11 output instead (-vo x11) does that change anything? certainly shouldn't require reinstalling the whole OS, this isn't windows...
