My problem is that there is no audio output through the jack provided of my Laptop, i can only hear sound through the inbuilt speakers of the laptop.i installed the alsa audio driver which comes with the CD.

here is my system config
LAPTOP MODEL : COMPAQ V 3018 TU
PROCESSOR :INTEL T1350 ,1.86 GHz , SOLO CORE
OS : SUSE 10.2

If your laptop came with another OS preinstalled, did you happen to try (with that other OS) if the audio jacks work? I've always thought that it's not up to the software to "move" the sound from the speakers to the audio jack --> some device that is connected to that, but it's up to the hardware. I might be wrong, but if some devices like computer speakers that have audio jacks that don't probably have an operating system inside can do that, I believe your laptop should be able to do that too (no matter what software onboard). My point is: are you sure the audio jacks are properly connected?

Of course another thing is to see your mixer settings (try alsamixer or aumix).
