I don't want to use Adobe as it's too heavy on resources. I'm looking for alternatives, one of which is the above.
The other I suppose is Gnash, but that hardly works either.

If you use a distro with Pulse Audio you may need to install the volume controls -- I would suggest alsamixer but it seems you've checked that already.
That aside the only thing I can suggest is to check whether ALSA mixer "sees" the plugin at all and go up the chain form there.

I'm only using ALSA not Pulse. Don't wish to use Pulse but I wonder if the plugin can work without Pulse.
How do I find out if alsamixer "to see" the plugin as you're suggesting?

I would check to make sure you don't have Pulse installed (no idea which distro you run). As to whether it "sees" it install any "graphic equalizer" type applications -- just check where the sound gets to.

I definitely don't have Pulse installed. Running SUSE, but the system will install Pulse depending on which pattern you choose which in turn is chosen depending on DE chosen.
So I'm at Alsamixer but don't quite know what else to do with it. Alsamixer is somewhat basic equalizer just the way I want it. Is there a way to find out any more info using other means?
I suspect the stupid plugin is compiled for use with a specific server. There was mention of this in the GIT source above. So I won't be surprised if the plugin is expecting the Pulse Audio server when there is none installed.

It's perfectly possible that the sound in "Lightspark" is broken. Unless somebody turns up with a knowledge of it your best bet is to try to work out whether you can get soudn out of it somehow. Try JACK, for example.
I found this on SlackBuild that might be of help. Check to see if you have a library called libflashsupport installed. If not you can download this lib and compile it or you can see if your distro has it available. It might be what you need to fix this problem.
