No audio from WMVs

Help here. Using Ubuntu 4.10 and just sucessfully managed to get ALSA software mixing for audio on multiple apps to work. However, I've found that I can no longer hear audio in WMV files. I have w32codecs installed, and I've tried playing files in both MPlayer and gxine, but I can't hear anything from WMV files. This doesn't happen on any other format other than WMV - QuickTime, Real, DivX encoded files and so forth all play fine. Can anybody help here?

does it give you any kind ov errors?

like missing wmvmod9.dll or anything?

there are some formats that are not readily supported via the w32codecs..

you may just need to put a few *.dll files in your /usr/lib/win32 directory.

run gxine or whatever you like from a terminal, that way you can see where it is breaking.

i had this same problems when i was starting out.. so i keep all my *dlls after i figure out they are needed.

let me know if i can be ov any help.

<edit>
i just noticed that it said you -NO LONGER- have audio.. did you have audio before?

Well, I don't get any errors when I run gxine from the terminal. There is sound, but it only happens every few seconds, and it's a short burst of sound before going mute again. And I know I'm not missing any Win32 files - at least none I know of.

And I've managed to figure out the source the problem - the files I've been playing were encoded in WMV7 codec. If I played a WMV8 or 9 file, it played back just fine.
