No acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

I got this message when I tried to install something using the ./configure command. I assumed it was because GCC was missing so I downloaded GCC 4.4.0 unzipped it and got the same message when I tried to install it. The PATH was pointing to the right directory.

I have an ASUS Eee PC 901 with Xandros.

use the package manager for installing compiler.... otherwise compiling GCC from source is a complicated matter.

Xandros uses apt-get?

Yes, Xandros uses apt-get and I've already tried "apt-get install gcc" but that didn't work. So how do I use the package manager to install the compiler?
