newbie to Linux install on MSI 6728

So far I have tried to install Suse 10.0.42, Linspire 5.0.59 and Slackware 10.1 none of which worked.

Here is my computer

MSI 6728 Neo2P dual proccessor 2.84 Ghz
Intel Pentium 4 proccessor
1 gig RAM
Adaptec SCSI RAID 5 140 gig 3 disk HD
onboard Realtek RTL8139 Ethernet
Realtek AC'97 onboard audio
onboard Intel 82865G /PE/P/GV graphics card 64M, also hav nVidia Geforce MX 4000 AGP card which is supported by Linux
AOpen DVD R/RW drive
150 gig ATA Maxtor HD
Intel 82801EB USB

Suse would go through the entire install, but when it came to booting I would just get a dark grey screen and none of my usb stuff would be on.

Slackware freezes as soon as it tries to load the install screen off a DVD

Linspire does the same as slackware.

If anyone out there has gotten Linux to work on an MSI machine I would love to know how you did it, and which release you used

By the way, I have only been using Linspire for 2 days on another slightly crappier machine so I don't know to much about configuring, kernels, binaries or much else about Linux yet

I have a similaar problem with a intel double processor machine with SCSI RAID.

The only 2 Versions of Linux I was able to install until now are RedHat8 and RedHat9.

I beleive the Problem is the Driver for the SATA RAID. Chech if there is a Adaptec Driver for Linux which can be handed to Linux at Installation boot.

I finally got it to work with Suse 9.2

Suse recognizes everything I have installed, including the SCSI RAID card and the 3 drives with Windows installed

My next problem though is trying to install a firewall, I get a multitude of missing software errors.

The first is an unacceptable c compiller, then GTK version, then autoconf,

Is there an easy way to install this stuff. Ans if so, where should it go to function correctly.

Keep in mind this is my 3rd time working in Linux, I barely figured out how to install Photoshop so far.
