rpm's are files that are used to install programs. It may help if you a little more specific on your problems though, what line of code did you use for example?

I am not sure what the exact line of code was but it was for security updates and stuff? Where can I go to get updates? I cant figure out why cd's wont play, dvd's wont play... there are certain glitches with some of the games... Is there a bug fix? any info will help..

I agree with Tom, your problems are vague at best... If you have successfullly installed MDK then I would first suggest you update your URPMI resources... This is the package manager that Mandrake uses for installing software and in most cases will handle all the dependency issues you may have...

RPM stands for 'Redhat package Manager" and is a general term for RPM type Linux distrobutions that use RPM's...

I would suggest usint "rpmdrake" or "urpmi" to install software at the begining...

This is your first step:

First off... thanks to you who have replied! second If I sound Vague, I am sorry. I just dont know what I am talking about...

I went to the site urpmi I have Mandrake 10.1 686 I believe they the best option that matches on that site is 586 I get 3 results... Contrib, Main and Japckage. I went to my root console and downlaoded the COntrib and the Main from the mirrors... Whe I go to update I am still getting a problem with Mirrors ,,?

Would I be better off wiping this OS out and doing a clean install of Mandriva?

Hi,

DON'T wipe the OS ! If it is a successful install try to keep it.
Your problem is that you simply have to go back to easyurpmi.org and change the
mirrors location. Mandriva being French, you'd be better off by choosing a French mirror.
Something else : you mentionned that you can't play cds, dvds and the like. This is normal.
Don't choose the jpackage for one of your sources , but plf free and plf non-free. This will
give you the packages yo need to get dvds and cds working.

Once the lists are d/loaded, install :
w32codecs, libdvdplay, lidvdread, and most of all libdvdcss to play commercial cds.Totem
is a good player, so is Kaffeine.

To get sound : run alsaconf in a root console
You can run alsactl store, but I think on Mandriva you don't need that.

Post back if you need more help.
Hopes it helps
Regards

ok I am hopless I guess... I screwed up Mandrake 10.1 cuaue I think I installed the wrong updates, or updates from a different version.. Things started to work but then when I rebooted nothing worked right. SO I updated to Mandriva Le 2005, I love it, installed all the updates and bug fixes and even the pachakes you wrote in the last post... w32 codes Libdvdcss libdvdread, and Libdvdplay... still nothing, and when I use Kscd the cd will play but I get no sound, I even did the alsaconf, like you said and opened up the mixer everything is on and working.. all my other sounds work just not from the cd. Any info will be a great help!!
