New To Linux

I recently added a new hard drive and partioned , using xp on it.
I would like to try linux on one of the partions.
Can I just download linux to one of these partions.
What would be the best OSand least frustrating version to try.

download and burn an iso (burn in 'image' mode).

those two distros are nice,

mandrake is always a nice stable distro that is very user friendly.

try them all

also, knoppix is a distro of linux that doesn't install onto the comp at all, but rather runs off a cd. This is good for people who don't want to delete any space to make room for linux or people who just want to try it out.

any distro is good
